Kenyan Safari - August 2017 Samburu

August 29th. Started at 7am for the 6 hour drive to Samburu. A very long trip! Samburu is north of Mount Kenya, low lying and very hot/parched. Interesting place.

No game drive as we arrived this year, our driver was struggling and keen to make the camp, though he did stop for an elephant herd crossing the path. The camp itself was nice, bigger and more dated than we'd previously had, but situated on the river so, between game drives, you could just sit overlooking the river and catch sight of the crocodiles drifting past or vultures landing in the trees opposite. Plenty to see in the camp too including; a wonderful lizard and his mate in the tree outside the restaurant, a family of mongeese working their way up a path to the side of the camp, crocs being fed in the evening, monkeys running around and numerous gorgeously coloured birds. This was all topped off by an elephant crossing the river and deciding to take up residence behind my sons lodge.

No leopard sighting this time but we got sight of the animal of the trip for me, a bat eared fox, simply gorgeous running around. Also many great elephant sightings and lots of crocs. On top of that we stumbled across a bush buck giving birth.

In the Samburu you get Grevy's Zebra rather than the common zebra found elswhere and reticulated giraffes. See here for the comparison of giraffe species.
