Kenyan Safari - August 2013 Treetops

August 29th. Set out from the Samburu to Treetops. About 3 hours. Interesting drive through to the coffee growing estates. You go to the Outspan hotel and transfer from there to Treetops by bus (another half hour). It's a way they keep the traffic down. The coach drops you off for a very short walk to the actual Treetops.

The Outspan Hotel. Nice hotel but to be honest, the couple of hours spent there was a couple of hours too long. Lunch was OK. The Baden Powell museum was the biggest waste of time ever. I didn't go in but the wife was daft enough to. Unless you're in to a load of different coloured woggles and paying a wadge of cash to see them, then avoid.

Treetops. I must admit I wasn't expecting a lot from this place. Was I wrong! It was a fascinating experience. You got to spend the night with a continual stream of elephants visiting the waterhole outside your window. You got to see them arguing with water buffalo and other elephants. They also had rooms with letterbox like holes in the wall and the elephants turn to see you as they walk past, a foot or two away. Awesome. Then there's hyenas, love hyenas. The only thing we didn't get was Leopards, not surprising really as the idiots in the bar were letting off their flash cameras continually, so it'd have scared them away - muppets! Still what we got was absolutely fascinating and some amazing opportunities to see some real behaviour in action. Fascinating place and well worth a visit.

Oh and one other piece of advice, it can get very cold at Treetops, it's high up in the mountains, don't underestimate this, take a jumper or jacket! I was in a shirt over a t-shirt and was cold. I don't feel the cold much either, you've been warned!

Pictures: only a few as it was dark for most of the time, you could see but rubbish for pictures as you can see by the third one below.
