Kenyan Safari - August 2013 Samburu

August 27th. Started at 7am for the 6 hour drive to Samburu. Long trip! Samburu is north of Mount Kenya, low lying and very hot/parched. Interesting place.

As we arrived we went on a game drive and shortly came across antelope, giraffe and, more interestingly a giraffe carcass and a nearby male lion. Not bad for starters and quickly made up for the long journey.

The Samburu Simba Lodge is beyond brilliant, we were treated like kings. All lodges have views out over countryside and we saw elephants and antelope aplenty. The usual monkets and baboons are running around and lizards aplenty. Also some fantastic bird life, some of which will come reasonably near when you're eating!

Things to watch for are the genet cats which come out at night in the light near the restaurant. Also, whilst watching these i got sight of a rare white tailed mongoose in the edge of the light, but unfortunately the 4 second glimpse wasn't enough to get a photo and it was dark!

Here was the best sighting of a leopard. Also we got to see a young crocodile, because I especially asked our guide, Isaac, to find one for me! Also saw a rare fish eagle nice and close. Also Grevy's Zebfra rather than the common zebra found elswhere.

Here you get reticulated giraffes. See here for the comparison of giraffe species.
