Kenyan Safari - August 2013 Lake Nakuru

August 30th. Started about 7am for the 5 hour drive to Lake Nakuru. Another long trip! We were supposed to stop at Thomson Falls but went straight past. Our driver was desperate to reach the Lake Nakuru Lodge for lunch.

I'd been to Lake Nakuru lodge for lunch the previous trip, but never stayed. The staff are a bit rude here and it's the worst of the places. It's also looking a bit grotty now. Still one night, we'd live. We did a long game drive in the afternoon. Unfortunatey, when we were last here we got to stop by the lake and look at huge flocks of flamingoes, however they had had large amounts of rain so that part of the park was flooded and, though we saw some, not in the numbers we'd seen previously. That's part of the beauty of safari's, it is different each time.

Our guide had learnt by this time that birds of prey interested us and he spotted a young martial eagle sat on a tree which was great to see.

Returning to our lodge that night there was a mosquito on the door which was frankly huge. I was so glad of nets that night.

In the morning, opening the curtains, we were treated to a couple of antelope who were watching something. They were pretty close and as we watch a foxlike creature walked past them and disappeared into the grass. It was a shame we didn't have the cameras ready. We're still not 100% sure but our belief is it was a black backed jackal, but it was alone and pretty small. Big bushy tail, it looked more like a fox. We'll never know for sure, but what a great sighting.

This is the place to see rhino, we saw black and white last time but only got a white on this trip.

Here you get Rothschilds giraffes. See here for the comparison of giraffe species.
